Explore the old pirate island of Tabarca. From both Santa Pola and Alicante, you can catch a ferry to Tabarca, here you will find a rich and varied plant and wildlife haven. Snorkelling in the crystal-clear water is something that should not be missed.
For culture and history, this area has plenty to keep you occupied in exploring and discovering. Don’t miss out on visiting the Mercado Central Market Hall and its two floors of excellent local produce like Iberian hams. For stunning views head to Castillo de Santa Bárbara, 166 metres above sea level at the top of the Benacantil Mountain.
Like football? Alicante has its own football team, Hércules Club de Fútbol (Hércules CF), who play their home games at Estadio José Rico Peréz in the middle of Alicante.
From most local airports you will find flights to Alicante operating regularly, with a variety of airlines offering reasonable ticket prices. There is a 24-hour airport shuttle bus; a one-way ticket costs €3.85. There is also a pensioner’s discount available. There is an airport shuttle to Arenales del Sol and Santa Pola.
If you prefer to rent a car, driving is easy with the excellent motorways, the main one being the AP-7, or travel the scenic route along the N-332. Parking is not a problem in central Alicante with several large parking areas.
Another pleasant way to travel around is on the TRAM; starting from Plaza de Los Luceros in Alicante it will take you north to El Campello then on to Benidorm and Denia. It also heads inland to Santa Vicente del Raspeig. The train station has frequent departures every day to many towns and cities throughout Spain including Valencia and Madrid.
