The area of La Marina Alta extends from Alicante in the south to Valencia in the north. It is here you will find the beautiful city of Denia, which dates back to the 11th century. A prominent feature of this lovely city is the ancient, historic castle, which is built on a cliff overlooking Denia and commands panoramic sea views. It has been inhabited ever since Roman times. The walls of the castle also host the Archaeological Museum, filled with Roman artefacts found nearby.
Denia is renowned for its 20 kilometres of coastline with sandy beaches, and for its culinary delights such as fresh seafood from the fish market and paella. The city has received UNESCO awards, and the beaches have a 'blue flag' award.
In Denia, you will also find beautiful nature reserves such as Montgo and Torre del Gerro with marked hiking trails to enjoy. A great way to get to different places in the city is to cycle or walk through the orange groves that border the dirt roads and the coastal strip.
In the town is the prestigious marina with its spectacular elevated promenade. The old town, the impressive tree-lined shopping street and the museums, all offer an insight into authentic Spanish culture and lifestyle. The Ibiza inspired lounge bars in the harbour area offer a cooling oasis in the city that has 320 days of sunshine a year. Denia attracts many boat owners, yacht club members and beach guests, it’s not unusual to find a celebrity face among them! Our experienced estate agents are happy to tell you more about what it is like to live in Denia.
Denia offers a variety of activities and attractions for those who are thinking of buying a property here. You will find both brand new apartments and old charming villas for sale. There are five different golf courses in the immediate area, and one of them is the first-class La Sella Golf, which is open all year round. In Denia, there is also a lovely beach walk, El Paseo, which is perfect for cycling, running and long walks. The city's old centre, Casco Antiguo, is located at the foot of the castle and here, modern architecture mixes with the old houses that are inhabited by the city's fishermen. Don't miss visiting the Cabo San Antonio Nature Reserve and the mighty Mount Montgo, which rises 800 meters above sea level.
The approximately 15 kilometres of coastline offers many different beaches, of which Playa de Les Marines is one of the most popular, with access to a variety of water sports. Denia also stands out as a festival town as it hosts many local festivals. There are also a variety of markets with everything from fruits, vegetables, clothes and crafts to fresh fish from the fish market on the harbour.
The Toy Museum explores Denia's rich toy-making heritage. The Ethnological Museum, in a 19th-century townhouse, has displays on local life. Nearby are the baroque Assumption Church and the arcaded City Hall.
Denia is located between two international airports. Alicante and Valencia's airports are both within an hour's drive. The proximity to airports and the ferry port makes Denia easy to access. You can easily travel to islands such as Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca on ferries that run daily all year round. There are also excellent tram and bus networks to other cities such as Calpe, Altea, and Benidorm.
